BIOGRAPHY

Durga Devi is a performer, teacher, choreographer and cultural organizer all in one, whose aim is propagating dance as part of a lifestyle in Singapore. As a Classical Indian dancer, she began learning the art of Bharathanatyam at the tender age of four under the guidance of Viswakala Bharathi, Smt Neila Sathyalingam.

Education
- A former disciple of “Viswakala Bharathi”, Smt. Neila Sathyalingam.
- fine nuances of Bharathanatyam, College of Fine Arts in Chennai.
- Course of "Navanrithya", Kolkata.
- Bachelor of Contemporary Arts with a Dance major, Deakin University Melbourne (graduation on 8/4/2005)

Career & Workshops
-German School Singapore & history museum: Conducted dance workshops and demonstrations in schools and clubs, which include a three-day’s workshop.
- AEP programmes (dance workshops): teaches Bharata Natyam to children in schools.
- People’s Association Indian Dance in Singapore: performed and choreographed classical, folk and contemporary works.
- SYAMA: Bharatanatyam teacher.

Performance & Choreography
1990 onwards - took part in many dance and art festivals. She has also represented Singapore, in festivals in Spain and Hongkong; helped Mr. Fang Dong Kai, a modern contemporary dance choreographer in the people’s association, successfully fused modern with Classical Indian Dance; performed in numerous temple shows, television documentaries and community club shows.
1986 - "Meenakshi Kalyanam” performed with Apsaras
1990 - "Kannapar” performed with Apsaras
1997 - "Arangetram”
2000 - "Aarupadai” Performed with Apsaras
2000 - Having experimented with Flamenco she contributed to the choreography of “Chariots of Fire” (a fusion of flamenco and Classical Indian Dance which was performed for the Chingay)
2001 - "Natya Bandham” solo Bharathanatya performance at DBS Auditorium.
2002 - "Sringaar” with guest artiste Sri. V Balagurunathan of Kalakshetra
2002 - "Antigone” staged in Greece, and performed by artises of Lasalle – Sia College of Arts in Singapore for the World Drama Schools festival.
2003 - "Swaagatham” at the Temple of Fine Arts, Kuala Lumpur.
2003 - "Swaagatham” at Monash Secondary College Theatre, Melbourne (21/09)
2003 - performed during the Music season in Chennai under the banner of Hamsadhwani.
2004 - "Peak” during the Melbourne Fringe Festival
2005 - "Third Frame” 140 Hill Street, MICA Building, #01-07 (29/01)
2005 - "Global Grooves in the Gardens” Mackay Regional Batanic Gardens (24/07)
Current - an active participant with the People’s Association and has performed several Chingays and other community projects over the years.
