"I like to paint from nature. This is the time when I can relax and immerse myself into the beauty of nature completely.

In Singapore, we have plenty of sunshine. Plants grow very well here. Subject matters for paintings are available everywhere - resplendent shrubs and plants, sight and sound in the tropic sun. I feel that the Impressionist approach in the treatment of light and colour can best capture the charm of our Lion City."

I have become fonder and fonder of using brighter colours and brisk strokes to express my feelings. I feel that artists should not be restrained and should have more room to express themselves. Only in this way will they be able to make a breakthrough in their creative pursuit. In my approach to painting, I seek to distinguish my works by using refreshing colour tones and brisk and lively stokes in keeping with my character, similar to those used by great artists like Sisley, Munch and Kokoschka in their later works.

I love to paint Malay kampungs partly because my childhood was spent in a Malay kampung and partly because I love Malay wooden houses built on stilts, the rustic beauty of the kampung scenery, interspersed with coconut trees swaying with the wind, improvised bridges spanning the streams and houses by the waterside. The view is enchanting.
