Tanoto foundation
The Tanoto Foundation was founded by
Sukanto Tanoto and his wife Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 2001.
It is a privately funded non-profit organisation focused on reducing poverty in rural areas through education,
empowerment and enhancement. Today, the Foundation is active in Indonesia, China and Singapore and supports programmes in education,
community and infrastructure development, financial assistance and disaster relief.
Tanoto Foundation envisions a future in which world-class education, healthcare,
and employment allow children and families to thrive in a society that retains the best of traditional culture and values.
Education
In Indonesia, the Tanoto Foundation Scholarship Programme provides opportunities for high-achieving
young generation coming from economically underprivileged families to pursue quality higher education.
Sukanto Tanoto and his wife believe that education is crucial to allow an individual realise his or
her maximum potential, enabling them to break out of the poverty cycle. The scholarship programme covers
28 universities across Indonesia. In addition, through
Pelita Pendidikan,
a School Improvement Programme, Tanoto Foundation reaches out to more than 200 schools in remote areas
of North Sumatra, Riau and Jambi. This programme focuses on building teachers’ capacity, strengthening
educational institutions, establishing library facilities and improving the physical and intellectual environments of schools.
In China, the Foundation partners Beijing University, Fudan University, Southeast University
and Tsinghua University in its scholarship programme. The Foundation has also established schools in remote areas.
In Singapore, the Foundation supports a variety of scholarship, professorship and research programs.
They include the Tanoto Scholarship Fund for NUS undergraduate medical students in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine,
the Medical Professorship and Research Program in the Duke-NUS Medical School, the Undergraduate Scholarships Fund
for Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University students, the Tanoto Library at INSEAD
and the Tanoto Foundation Centre for Southeast Asian Arts in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
EMPOWERMENT
Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto also believe that the effort to empower the community and enhance their
quality of lives is also required to support poverty alleviation.
Empowerment program is carried out together with national and local NGOs and corporate partners.
The activities with corporate partners include Integrated Farming System and support for small and medium enterprises, vocational training, and plasma farmers’ capacity building.
ENHANCEMENT
Tanoto Foundation and its partners work together to support development and improvement of access to clean water
and electricity, and health facilities. Recognising that there are special and immediate needs in times of natural
calamities, the Tanoto Foundation also distributes financial and material assistance to people affected by disasters
such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods.
"Making a difference in people’s lives is, perhaps, the single most satisfying thing one can ever do.
We want to bestow upon our children, and future generations of the Tanoto family, this very special gift
– the privilege of giving" ~ Sukanto Tanoto
